This position is under the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service of the VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System in Aurora, CO. The position oversees the accessioning area and phlebotomy support for the wards, the phlebotomy support for the outpatient laboratory area, the send out of specimens to referral laboratories and the collection of employee drug screens.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Leads a unit or team of employees performing work at the GS-6/GS-5 level.
Provides guidance and technical direction for accomplishing the work of this section.
Assigns staff to achieve optimum patient care and timely delivery of specimens.
Ensures the work assignments of employees in the team are carried out.
Distributes and balances workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specialization.
Receives patients for medical laboratory testing, collects specimens, and evaluates tests for processing determination.
Performs patients care procedures such as collection of lab specimens. the proper collection and handling of various specimens.
Receives, validates, processes and distributes specimens to the proper laboratory section for testing.
Prepares specimens to be sent to outside laboratories, including reference and sharing laboratories, for testing not done at this Medical Center.
Properly obtains, maintains, cleans and stores all laboratory medical equipment according to established policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full time. Monday - Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM rotating holidays and weekends

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/26/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For GS-07 a position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06 . The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. A SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
Preferred Experience: At least 2 years experience with blood draw in an outpatient and/or hospital setting.

Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings OR
Technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: performing phlebotomy in an in-patient and out-patient hospital setting; performing accessioning and sample processing procedures within a laboratory setting; experience with Medical Record Systems; experience in sending out biological samples.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts required.

You must have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Physical Requirements: The position primarily involves work performed in both sitting and standing positions. Standing and bending for a
prolonged period of time, walking, lifting up to 20 pounds, kneeling, and some climbing of stairs is required. The work requires manual dexterity, a large degree of concentration, and working at top speed for several hours at a time. The ability to distinguish colors and color intensity is required.
