The primary purpose of this position is to work with and lead a small crew of no less than three and no more than seven aircraft structural maintenance mechanics, providing training and accomplishing trades and labor work.
Duties
- Accomplishes assigned tasks while providing guidance to other workers.
- Works alongside team members and guides production of active duty and civilian maintenance personnel on specific tasks, assigned by the supervisor Signs off on aircraft forms for work performed by others and clears safety of flight condition or equipment serviceability (i.e., Red-Xs).
- Serves as technical advisor to shift supervisor in the resolution of production problems. Provides training for personnel assigned to group led while accomplishing tasks.
- Ensures adequate levels of material and operational equipment are on hand to accomplish required tasks. Ensures team abides by all rules and regulations, and policies established by higher authority relative to safety, security, fire prevention, and good housekeeping.

- Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance to perform work in sensitive areas.
- The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle which requires a valid drivers license.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WL-3800, Metal Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT)(PAINTER) LEADER without more than normal supervision; the ability to lead.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of a wide range of principles, processes, and techniques of trade(s) and/or craft(s). Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
2. Knowledge of personnel management policies, practices, and procedures, including sexual harassment and Equal Employment Opportunity/Equal Employment Treatment.
3. Knowledge of safety, environmental, aircraft foreign object debris prevention, and confined space programs and the applicable standards, regulations, and requirements.
4. Knowledge in using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools, equipment, and precision measuring and/or test equipment. Ability to plan and organize work assignments to included determining resources required to accomplish mission.
5. Knowledge in troubleshooting, inspecting, and/or tracing hard to locate defects or problems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and technical specifications.
6. Ability to examine, inspect and evaluate aircraft sheet metal and composite structures to locate cracks, breaks, holes. bulges, dents, and loose or missing rivets, .and determine the type and extent of repairs needed to restore original strength and contour.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must have physical and mental ability to work in confined spaces. Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier items. Prolonged standing; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; And reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools is required. Frequency handles, lifts, and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifts and moves heavier items with assistance from others or with weightlifting equipment.
