LOCATION: This position is located in the Wabash Building, 6100 Wabash Avenue Baltimore MD, 21215.
The Mail and File Clerk (Benefits and Earnings Assistant) will be engaged in clerical work involving the initial receipt, classifying and routing incoming correspondence and folders to the appropriate units within OCO.
Duties
Prepares completed work for outgoing dispatch, which involves checking forms for completeness, proper number of copies, stripping and filing forms.
Receives and opens incoming mail, sorting readily identifiable mail to over 100 distribution points. Receives monies in the form of checks, bank drafts, money orders, cash, etc., addressed to SSA (for recoupment of SSI overpayments).
Records and controls registered, insured and certified mail, safeguarding and ensuring proper processing of any enclosed cash or other negotiable instruments.
Prepares receipt vouchers and forwards remittances to the Division of Finance or the appropriate PSC with a copy of the voucher.
Identifies misdirected correspondence and routes it to proper destination.

If you are using experience to qualify, you must have:
GS-4: Applicants must have at least one year of general experience in progressively responsible clerical or office work which demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position.
Note: Part-time work is prorated in crediting experience (e.g., if you work 20 hours per week for a 12-month period), you will be credited with 6 months of experience.
Physical Requirement: This position is primarily sedentary; however, incumbent may spent up to 50 percent of the working day standing, bending and walking. The work can also involve lifting and carrying moderately heavy parcels (up to 50 pounds) and the pushing of loaded mail carts.
In all locations work may be performed in an area containing skids, hampers, carts, sacks and other mail processing equipment, which produces a moderate noise level and some environmental stress.
Education
SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION: If you are qualifying for this position based on completed education at an accredited U.S. college, university, or other educational institution, you must provide a copy of your transcripts.
GS-4: Completion of a full 2-years above high school in any field of study OR a combination of post-high school education and the general experience described above. One year of study is defined as 30 earned semester hours or 45 earned quarter hours.
COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants may possess an equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and General experience to meet total experience requirements for this position. Only education in excess of the first 30 semester hours (i.e., beyond the first year) is creditable toward meeting the general experience requirement. One half academic year of study (15 semester hours) beyond the first year is equivalent to 6 months of general experience.
If selected, you may be required to provide your official college transcripts prior to the effective date of the personnel action placing you into the new position. Experience and education will be computed as percentages of the overall requirements and must equal to 100 percent when combined.
