The primary purpose of this position is to function as a Space Staff Historian for Headquarters, United States Space Force (HQ USSF) on behalf of the Department of the Air Force History Office (AF/HO). The incumbent conducts research and writing on topics related to USSF history and advises the Director on matters related to the USSF History publications programs.
Duties
Performs professional historian duties including scholarly research, and production of topical papers and periodic history reports documenting the key activities and accomplishments of the Space Staff.
Answers a variety of questions from, and provides information to, a multitude of official and unofficial agencies, institutions, and individuals concerning the history of HQ USSF.
Maintains historical archives for HQ USSF.
Provides policies and direction for the development and maintenance of heraldic, lineage, cultural records, and reference materials.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions and the Individual Occupational Requirements.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-13, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes 1) Using a working knowledge of professional historical principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, including scholarly, historical, archival, and organizational research. 2) Providing knowledge and general understanding of federal government history programs and their current operations, policies, programs, and activities. 3) Applying knowledge of U.S. history, military history, military aerospace history, and military space history. 4) Performing historical research in a wide variety of sources, critically evaluate and analyze sources of information, organize, and synthesize documents and other research materials, and present written findings in a scholarly and coherent manner. 5) Communicating effectively orally and in writing. 6) Maintaining good working relations with officials from a variety of organizations, historians in subordinate offices, coworkers, contractors, scholarly colleagues, editors, researchers, and the public.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-13 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-14 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of professional historical principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, including scholarly, historical, archival and organizational research.
Knowledge and general understanding of federal government history programs and their current operations, policies, programs, and activities.
Knowledge of U.S. history, military history, military aerospace history, and military space history.
Ability to perform extensive historical research in a wide variety of sources, critically evaluate and analyze sources of information, organize and synthesize documents and other research materials, and present written findings in a scholarly and coherent manner.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).
