The PTSD-SUD Senior Social Worker is a member of Substance Treatment And Recovery/STAR, the specialty SUD program within the Behavioral Health Service Line/BHSL at the Fayetteville, NC VA Coastal Healthcare System. This position is based in Fayetteville, NC. The primary duties of the PTSD-SUD Senior Social Worker are the provision of trauma-informed integrated treatment for Veterans diagnosed with co-occurring SUD and PTSD.

Provides training for other members of a multidisciplinary treatment team in areas related to substance use disorder, mental health assessment, treatment, and behavior management, life skills, and co-occurring disorders. The PTSD-SUD Senior Social Worker is a member of Substance Treatment And Recovery/STAR, the specialty SUD program within the Behavioral Health Service Line/BHSL at the Fayetteville, NC VA Coastal Healthcare System. This position is based in Fayetteville, NC. The primary duties of the PTSD-SUD Senior Social Worker are the provision of trauma-informed integrated treatment for Veterans diagnosed with co-occurring SUD and PTSD. Additional duties maybe assigned within STAR or other BHSL program areas as needed for the overall benefit of the Medical Center and BHSL. Independently conducts intake and needs assessment of Veterans that present to STAR for services related to a substance use disorder. Provides all necessary assessment functions, e.g. interviewing, psychosocial histories, and mental health assessments to aid in the development of treatment plans and clinical assignments. Incumbent works independently with patients and families who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems by providing evidenced based non-pharmacological interventions and case management services including therapy/counseling (individual, couples, families, and groups) to Veterans for issues related to PTSD and other complex and diverse psychosocial problems and maintains a designated clinical caseload. Independently performs case finding functions and outreach, identifying and screening patients for psychosocial needs. Incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to independently implement treatment modalities, provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families and groups. Substance use disorder treatment will be evidence-based in nature whenever available for a particular condition, and the incumbent will utilize best practices to the extent possible in all patient care interactions. Develops treatment plans with the Veteran that address the factors that contributed to the mental health referral and other co-occurring factors within a recovery model framework. Works with the Veteran to realize the Veteran's treatment goals, and reassesses and revises goals as indicated by the Veteran's engagement in treatment. Provides Social Work support to the STAR Teams as a functional member of the team, to include consultation and interventions. The STAR Social Worker will serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team. The Social Worker will develop partnerships and knowledge of community agencies, especially those serving seriously mentally ill Veterans and providing community mental health to Veterans, with regular contact and communication. Independently identifies high-risk patients and provides case management services. Incumbent is a subject matter expert regarding both integrated treatment and coordinating concurrent treatment of PTSD and SUD. Incumbent provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates family conferences by providing couples and family therapy, and psycho-educational classes. Incumbent is able to independently work with patients and families who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems by providing therapy/counseling (individual, couples, families, and groups) to Veterans for issues related to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), other complex and diverse psychosocial problems and maintains a designated clinical caseload. Has working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology. The STAR SW will independently conduct psychosocial assessments. Utilizes the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-V) as the basis for diagnostic impressions and conclusions. Incumbent possesses the skills to offer psychosocial interventions and measures outcomes to interventions. Incumbent develops person-centered, culturally sensitive treatment plans in collaboration with the Veteran/family to address mental health needs of patients. Incumbent possesses the skills to offer psychosocial interventions and measures outcomes to interventions. Successfully completes an evidence-based practice training to maintain or increase competency for a treatment modality relevant to their practice. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ? 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Experience and Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Preferred Experience: 2 years post LCSW experience. Substance Abuse Treatment experience and trauma specific care.
