This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, serving in the Textual Records Division within Research Services under the Chief Operating Officer. The incumbent will carry out complex professional assignments involving reference, processing, description, and other related activities pertaining to textual holdings of the National Archives.
Duties
As an ARCHIVIST, you will:
Contributes to the planning of programs leading to the identification and protection of permanently valuable records.
Plans and coordinates activities leading to the identification of records eligible for transfer to the National Archives and Records Administration.
Reviews records and applies appropriate restrictions in compliance with EO 13526, the Freedom of Information Act, access rules of the House and Senate, copyright laws, or donor requirements.
Contributes significantly to the planning of a finding aids program that facilitates discovery and use of a complex body of records.
Develops and delivers responses (orally or in writing) to non-routine reference requests that draw upon a broad knowledge of records, involve multiple sources of information, employ innovative research techniques, or require interpretation of complex rules or procedures.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
To be qualified for this position at the GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Experience researching and reporting on archival records.
AND
- Experience providing customer service to various audiences through oral and written communication techniques.
OR
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (i.e., beyond the first year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
To be qualified for this position at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
-Preforming archival functions, such as monitoring, researching and managing documents.
AND
-Experience communicating and assisting with various audiences.OR1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
NOTE: Only education in excess of the basic education requirement (i.e., beyond Bachelor's degree) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-9, you must have been at the GS-7 level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-7, you must have been at the GS-5 level for 52 weeks

Education Requirements:
Individual Occupational RequirementIn addition to the above, all applicants must meet the Basic Requirement, defined below:
A. Bachelor's degree in archival science;
or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
