The incumbent is responsible for general operations, maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Chief, Facilities Management Service (FMS) and the Chief, for the Alaska Veteran Affairs Healthcare System (AVAHS). These responsibilities are associated with the operations and maintenance of building systems at the Anchorage Veterans Affairs (VA) Muldoon Clinic and can involve temporary periodic duties at other VA owned and leased facilities.

Duties

Incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Chief, of FMS. Work is assigned on a long-term, as well as on a day-to-day basis. Work assignments will come from the electronic work order system, assignments from supervisor, or emergent situations. Duties include but are not limited to: General maintenance and repairs of all types associated with an operating health care facility. Identify basic electrical problems and performs the repairs/upgrades required to ensure safe working and living environments throughout the facility. Performs routine repairs of electrical fixtures, devices and equipment requiring the removal and replacement, etc. Items repaired or replaced include switches, controls, circuit breakers, pumps, receptacles, lighting fixtures, cord and plug assemblies. The incumbent must be skilled in the use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required. Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Operate and use a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials using typical shop mathematics for complex and exact projects. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials by interpreting complex or incomplete instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes. Repairs plumbing systems. Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems. Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and fixtures including; water closets; urinals; lavatories; tubs, fire sprinkler systems, faucets; hose bibs; and showers. Routinely inspects and performs preventive maintenance on boilers, domestic hot water tanks, heat exchangers, hydronic piping systems, pumps, electrical generator, and direct digital control (DDC) systems, etc.; performs minor system repairs and replacement, or recommends equipment for qualified servicing or replacement. Responsible for key control system including hardware, locks, and keys which can include making/punching new keys. Responsible for maintaining the work order system and closing completed work orders in a timely manner. Must be capable of becoming a government purchase card holder. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Maintenance Mechanic performs tasks requiring moderate physical exertion including frequent medium lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The Maintenance Mechanic will require the ability to work in a variety of work sites, including roofs, scaffolds, crawl spaces, ladders, etc. and must be able to distinguish colors. The position requires standing or walking most of the time, working indoors and outdoors, and in adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Work is sometimes performed in bad weather, or in very hot, cold, or poorly ventilated or lighted areas. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to heights, intermittent slippery and uneven surfaces, moving objects and mechanisms, splinters, chips, burrs, sharp edges, equipment noise, fuels, lubricants, solvents, chemicals, fumes, smoke, dirt, dust, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, high intensity glare and flying sparks, high temperature or electrically energized items, and pressurized gasses and liquids. There may be discomfort when wearing personal protective safety equipment. The Maintenance Mechanic will be subject to the normal hazards encountered in the trade, and various types of infections associated with a hospital.
