This position is located in the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Investigative & Forensic Sciences (OIFS), Washington, DC. The mission of NIJ is to improve knowledge and understanding of crime and justice issues through science, and to provide objective and independent knowledge and tools to inform the decision-making of the criminal justice community to reduce crime and advance justice at the state/local levels.
Duties
Directs multi-disciplinary research programs for the development, implementation and transition of technological advances in investigative and forensic science.
Manages delegated aspects of NIJ's Office of Investigative and Forensic Sciences (OIFS) operations, informs strategic direction, coordinates program assessment, evaluates policy, provides a high level of technical expertise in forensic sciences and represents OIFS on key issues in a variety of internal and external forums.
Initiates, manages or oversees new highly technical programs, projects and studies in the investigative and forensic sciences.
Oversees the process of planning, developing and presenting recommendations to the OIFS Director concerning such matters as budget development, research goals, solicitations and activities to analyze forensic science and criminal justice problems.

Qualifications
Basic Entry Requirements:
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Examples of specialized experience include: Assists in developing, coordinating, and/or preparing long and short-term technical program activities and research initiatives, particularly new research initiatives, in the investigative and forensic sciences field; Determines the technical applicability and feasibility of scientific and technology-based techniques and solutions to forensic needs; Participates in or develops new or revised techniques and methodologies to accomplish agency goals and objectives within its research programs; Contributes to subordinate or peer scientific review of professional studies, research and analysis in areas relevant to potential criminal justice technology applications of science and technology; Identifies and/or mitigates possible future limitations associated with policy or legislation as they relate to areas including but not limited to the forensic sciences, crime laboratories, criminal justice and law enforcement.
