Duties

As a Genetic Counselor in the Genetics Branch (GB), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), you will: Serve as a primary resource and referral point for addressing inquiries concerning information related to research protocols. Provide genetic counseling and genetic testing results to families via phone, explanatory letters, or in-person consultation. Construct family pedigrees, contact family members, aid in obtaining genetic specimens, and facilitate proper clinical and research molecular testing. Serve as a liaison with genetics/genetic counseling societies, patient support groups and other non-governmental agencies interested in inherited cancer. Assist in clinical and translational research in the Branch, including performing reviews of relevant medical/scientific literature, organizing data, and writing manuscripts for publication. Evaluate the potential impact of legislation, papers, reports, and other information on current and planned genetic counseling activities and recommend appropriate action. Participate in ongoing clinical quality control within the Branch, making suggestions for how to best integrate and execute genetic services to patients. If you are selected at the GS-11 level, you will essentially perform the same duties at the full performance level described above, however, duties will be less complex, and will be performed under closer supervision, with more detailed guidance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: In order to qualify for a Genetic Counselor, GS-401 position you must meet the following Education Requirements: Have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Specialized Experience: In addition, to qualify for a Genetic Counselor, you must meet the following: GS-11: To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must meet the following: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field; OR One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: conducting research and ongoing evaluative analysis of research direction and progress; discussing with patients and families the basis of clinical trials, roles of various team members, and protocol specifics; providing genetic counseling and education to patients and makes recommendations. OR A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. GS-12: To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must meet the following: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing scientific and technical expertise in support of genetic research activities; planning and conducting studies on heritability of genetic diseases; discussing with patients and families the basis of clinical trials, roles of various team members, and protocol specifics; directing care of patients by identifying common coping mechanisms; providing psychosocial assessments of patients. The ideal candidate will possess an American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
