Duties

Hire, plan, guide, and evaluate work assignments of subordinate staff of Tribal Relations Program. Develop strategies, plans and establish relations with Tribal Nations and organizations. Ensure relations with tribal partners and external stakeholders are monitored, mutually beneficial and productive. Monitor the Tribal Relations Program to be assured that overall objectives are met, resolve issues and recommend targeted strategies as needed.

This position provides overall direction and supervision of all activities relative to the development, coordination and management of the Tribal Relations Program and develops partnerships with local Tribal grassroots organization and one-on-one relations with Tribal Governments; both federally and state recognized tribes. Specialized Experience: For the GS-13, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sector) which is in or related to the position to be filled and which provided the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies to successfully perform the duties of a Supervisory Tribal Relations Specialist. This experience includes activities such as: supervising and/or leading a team; building and developing strategies to improve relationships with native and indigenous communities; setting short and long term program priorities, monitoring overall project success under stringent deadlines and making recommendations to resolve issues; building tribal cultural awareness and providing guidance on tribal protocols; the ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals both inside and externally to the organization. Education: Education cannot be substituted for specialized experience at this grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
