You will serve as a NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTER in the NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST OPERATIONS BRANCH, NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST DIVISION OF THE QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will independently performs complex nondestructive testing and analysis on naval surface ships and submarines and nuclear propulsion plants to determine structural integrity of the items. You will interprets test results and determines final acceptance/rejection of items in accordance with specific codes and specifications without supervisory controls. You will control of production work and have the authority to direct work stoppage when further work would cover a defect or endanger personnel or equipment. You will complete and maintain detailed test records that are subject to audit.

Requirements

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO INSPECT: Inspecting Nuclear Reactor Plant components while using ultrasonic testing (UT), X-Ray and Isotope (Gamma) Radiographic Testing (RT), and Eddy Current Heat Exchanger Tubing Testing (ET) inspection methods. Performing nondestructive testing and analysis on mechanical components, piping systems, and structural assemblies. Performing surface inspections using liquid penetrant testing (PT), and magnetic particle testing (MT) inspection methods; Interpreting and evaluating test results by discriminating electromagnetic signatures, waveforms, digital images, and the density of processed film; Performing calibration and safety checks of test equipment prior to and after performance of inspections.
