This position is a member of the Suicide Prevention Team which assesses and identifies Veterans considered high risk for suicide; coordinates appropriate care, and collaborates with various mental health providers, Veterans, families, and community agencies regarding treatment options and appropriate suicide safety plans.

This positions can be filled by a Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC), or Senior Social Worker. The following is a list of the open announcements for this position: Clinical Psychologist -CBSS-12091750-23-CMJ (Internal) CBSS-12091751-23-CMJ (Public) Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) -CBSS-12091752-23-CMJ Senior Social Worker -CBSS-12091753-23-CMJ The Suicide Prevention Coordinator is assigned to provide the full range of psychological services at the Eastern Kansas Health Care System (EKHCS) Topeka, Kansas location. This includes psychological assessment, evidence based individual and/or group psychotherapy (where applicable), psychoeducational intervention, community outreach and team consultation in the clinical management of Veteran/patient care. Major duties include: Provides a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders, particularly for complex or unusually difficult patients. Providing comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, group, and family psychotherapy.- Developing, implementing, and documenting psychotherapeutic treatment plans for patients who require such treatment. Evaluating suicide risk and protective factors. Identifying veterans at High Risk for Suicide and placing, reviewing, and inactivating Category I Patient Record Flags - High Risk for Suicide. Tracking/coordinating care for veterans flagged as High Risk for Suicide. Tracking and reporting data related to treatment for veterans flagged as High Risk for Suicide, suicide attempts, preparatory behaviors, and deaths by suicide. Contacting family members of veterans who die by suicide. Engaging in suicide risk crisis intervention. Responding to consults placed by Veterans Crisis Line responders. Providing education to staff about suicide risk and protective factors, suicide risk screening and comprehensive suicide risk evaluation, gatekeeper training, safety planning, suicide behavior reporting, and general suicide prevention information. Providing education about suicide risk and protective factors to patients, family members, and significant others. Providing gatekeeper training to veterans in residential treatment programs. Consulting with staff in all parts of the hospital regarding identifying and treatment planning for high risk or potentially high risk veterans. Interacting with community partners, such as law enforcement or community hospitals to identify and ensure timely follow-up treatment for high risk veterans. Conducting community outreach and education regarding suicide risk and protective factors, gatekeeper training, and awareness of the Veterans Crisis Line. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ? 7403(f). Grade Determinations: GS-12 Experience and Education: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes. Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills. Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area. Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary but does require some walking, standing and bending.
