Duties are performed in the operating room with regular and recurring exposure to toxic and noxious gases such as methylacrylate and 10% formalin, anesthetic agents, exposure to radiation (x-rays and radioactive substances), laser beams, and exposure to infected or contaminated body fluids or tissue, all requiring special safety precautions.
Duties
Assists surgical team with patient positioning, prepping, and setting up the operative field.
Prepares prosthesis and/or surgical devices during procedures.
Assists in training staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and operating room/surgical procedures.
Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical setups.
Follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment.
Monitors and maintains sterile practices throughout surgical procedures.
Determines the effectiveness of sterilization, packing, storage, and shelf life.
Performs sharps, sponge, and instrument counts of surgical items before and after surgical procedures.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.
Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 8:00 - 16:30, Friday 7:30- 16:00

Physical Requirements: Requires function range of body mobility including: handling and lifting, manual and finger dexerity and eye-hand coordination sufficient to assist patients and/or handle and use required instruments and machinery/tools with moving parts. Requires sufficient muscle strength tp perform lifting, transferring, positioning, ambulating and transporting of patient's and/or equipment on a daily or hourly basis.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Specialized experience includes:
Do you possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience, which equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Surgicial Technician, GS-07 position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this specialized experience must have been equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in Federal service to qualify at the grade 07.
Examples of specialized experience include:
1)Recognizes changes in patient condition and takes appropriate actions in response to the situation.
2)Provides guidance and support to staff regarding infection control and patient safety protocol.
3)Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals to determine proper positioning and assurances of all supplies/equipment are available.
4)Utilizes medical terminology when interpreting requests and provide proper documentation for surgical procedures.
5)Utilizes universal precautions to protect patients and staff from exposure to any infectious materials.
Note: Evidence of specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held on your resume. You must provide work experience information such as hours per week, salary, and starting/ending dates of employment (month and year format) to establish you have one (1) full year of Specialized Experience at or comparable to the required grade level.
