Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Chief Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is aligned under the Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine Service and reports to the Service Chief. The Chief CRNA makes recommendations that may affect the interpretation or development of VA policies or programs within their scope of practice. Incumbent provides anesthesia care in unusually extensive and complex surgical procedures of prolonged duration and may involve high-risk patients.

The Chief CRNA demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. He/she is responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level.
The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
Clinical Functions
Attends Service Line Staff meetings, Clinical Executive Committee meetings, seminars, conferences, and represents a professional image of Nurse Anesthesia practice in the Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine Service line in the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.
Demonstrates current clinical practice and acts as a consultant in nurse anesthesia practice.
Acquires and maintains current knowledge in practice (assessments, therapies, procedures, and technology) to effectively meet program, service, functional area, protocols and/or system performance.
Select and administer pre-anesthetic medication according to established protocol.
Assist in the treatment and management of emergency airway problems as needed throughout the hospital. Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by performing airway management including endotracheal intubations when necessary. Serve as code captain in the absence of a physician according to established protocols.
Make Post-Operative rounds and record on the patient's permanent record the presence of or absence of anesthesia-related-complications
Administrative Functions
Serve as the first line supervisor and has administrative responsibility for CRNAs and CRNA educator
Maintain secondary supervisory responsibility over the Medical Instrument Technicians (Anesthesia Techs).
Manage activities including interviewing, hiring and discipline. Resolve personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as necessary.
Recognize and evaluate the strengths and weakness of self and staff while regularly coaching staff on their contribution to the mission of the agency and with their performance development. Help staff to understand the context of their work and how it relates to the work of others and the agency
Design schedule and staffing models, as appropriate, for meet the demands of the OR and off-site schedules, as well as, fluctuations in workload.
Help develop and implement anesthesia specific policies and procedures in conjunction with the Chief Anesthesiologist and medical staff. Coordinate policy review and Joint Commission readiness standards with staff and system.
Completes Controlled Substance Audits for the service as required by the Service Chief and Chief of Pharmacy.
Research Functions
Collaborates with multidisciplinary VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, University, or Network groups in research and educational initiatives to improve patient care outcomes, practice improvements, and Medical System enhancements.
Remains abreast of current trends in evidence-based practice from research and studies
Identifies clinical issues and initiates changes in clinical practice based on evidence-based current concepts and findings from and for research.
Education Functions
Participates as a clinical instructor for all SRNA trainees that affiliate with the Anesthesia Department for their clinical anesthesia education.
Maintains knowledge of current evidence-based techniques and best practice trends in education to provide a stimulating learning experience for the adult learner.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The AANA has compiled current listings of approved training institutions, which are published annually in the December issue of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Journal. The American Hospital Association in their "Guide to the Health Care Field" also publishes listings of approved training institutions annually in August.
On and after May 4, 1993, certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified nurse anesthetists employed by VA as a nurse anesthetist prior to May 4, 1993 and continuously thereafter. Any nurse anesthetist who leaves VA employment or vacates the nurse anesthetist occupation for another VA position, must meet the current requirement of certification for re-appointment as a nurse anesthetist. The CCNA and the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists have designated the AANA's web site as a display agent for their information.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: Physical and mental stamina sufficient to diligently monitor the anesthetized patient for prolonged periods of time and have the ability to manage many stressful situations
