Duties
Performs update changes, additions or deletions using automated Government Bills of Lading and Commercial Bills of Lading (GBUCBL) systems, ensuring copies of the information is forwarded to the appropriate office for further processing.
Receipts and edits high-priority and exception requisitions, and resolves any computer reject conditions.
Contacts appropriate authorities to arrange movement of priority requisitions destined for OCONUS locations. Coordinates daily with the Fleet Locator and obtains locations of Navy vessels, and/or mobile units.
Prepares complete enroute instructions for material being shipped.
Practical knowledge of substantive codes and symbols to determine issue priority groups, when shipments are destined to primary or supplementary destinations.
Prepares daily production reports and forwards copies to appropriate personnel.

Qualifications
To qualify for a Transportation Assistant, your resume and supporting documentation must support:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
Selecting modes of carriers, consolidating shipments or coordinating connections.- Responding to customer inquiries and ensuring regulatory compliance throughout the movement process.
Expediting or locating lost or misplaced shipments.
Reconciling, preparing, verifying and updating transportation reports and documents
B. Education: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience.
