You will serve as a General Engineer in the In-Service Engineering department, Weapons Systems Engineering Division, within the Weapons Maintenance Engineering Branch; Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport (NAVUNSEAWARCENDIV KEYPORT WA).

Duties

You will be responsible for the areas of new and emerging programs like hybrid torpedoes, alternative fuels development, advanced electronics technology application, process engineering, and test and evaluation support. You will be the recognized as a NUWC Keyport systems level engineering expert for torpedo/VLA design, production and testing. You will serve as the design agent or participates in team environment with other Naval Laboratories and/or contractors in development of weapon system modifications and/or development of new weapon systems, underwater mines and countermeasures. You will participles in Integrated Product Teams (IPT), trade study teams, Design Reviews, Test Readiness Reporting (TRR) and customer status briefs as required. You will work with range and production departments to produce/test prototype systems and production level products. You will provide project leadership or serves as engineering consultant in support of system and subsystem failure analysis projects as required. You will direct or perform simulation and/or laboratory testing as required to identify root cause. You will develop plans for resolution of problem and directs corrective action in the form of weapon, test or procedure modifications. You will generate technical reports inclusive of findings and corrective action taken. You will review progress reports and budgets and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. You will perform integration of new design with existing systems. You will plan, coordinate and provide project oversight of Department production and testing of advanced torpedo projects. You will monitor the operation overall and to analyze the status of the work in process, the accomplishments and the rate of work completion, so that resources adjustments can be coordinated with all personnel. You will provide direction to engineering and production support personnel in support of these efforts You will be responsible for making sure the documentation and inspections are complete to the standards of the torpedo quality instructions. You will be responsible to ensuring these standards and procedures are established and available to the work force. You will coordinate workload requirements with the Department are engineering support staff so that the overall technical requirements are met.

  • This position is covered under the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA). Certification in the Acquisition Functional Area and category assigned to the position is required within established category timeframes.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: As a professional engineer designing and developing weapons systems to include project oversight, conceptual development, and planning. Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A (above)

OR

Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
