Duties

This position will allow you to use your expertise in supervising, leading, and directing the public affairs program for a Border Patrol Sector. Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen the Department by developing management strategies to effectively convey sensitive and controversial information to a wide variety of public and private communities. This position starts at a salary of $116,393.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $151,308.00 (GS-14, Step 10) with promotion potential to $151,308 (GS-14 Step 10). In an effort to leverage support of the border security mission, you will become a key member of a team of Homeland Security professionals by engaging with non-government organizations, private stakeholders, and legislators so that they may understand the U.S. Border Patrol mission and operations. Typical work assignments include: Advising and assisting the Chief Patrol Agent and Border Patrol leadership on issues related to the news media, internal and external stakeholders, and Border Patrol workforce; communicating with other government agencies. Serving as the single point of contact for all news media matters throughout the Sector. Engaging border communities through outreach programs aimed at gaining regional perspectives, disseminating vital information for public awareness, and increasing operational effectiveness. Supervising and managing a staff consisting of Border Patrol Agents, professional, administrative, technical and clerical personnel, public affairs, and border community liaisons units. Directing and controlling media relations for the Sector; serving as subject matter expert on operational matters associated with media relations that impact the Agency.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Planning, researching, writing and editing internal and external communications products to include talking points, fact sheets, reports, official statements, press releases, and presentations. Conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis of policy and program issues to ensure that issues and concerns are addressed accurately and tactfully in both internal and external correspondence. Developing, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of communications strategies, materials and programs. Analyzing policy issues and changing policies and laws to identify and anticipate communication needs and potential effect on stakeholders. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 08/29/2023.
