If you excel in providing the best customer service and experience, this is the position for you! The main purpose of this position is to serve as a Patient Escort under the screening and escort section of the Patient Experience Office at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. The incumbent is responsible for performing daily screening of patients, staff, and visitors as well as escorting and/or transporting patients to the appropriate locations for tests, procedures, and other destinations.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Ensure all persons entering the Iowa City VA Medical Center are properly screened in accordance with established guidelines. Transport patients and their personal effects to the correct location for procedures, tests, and other destinations, notifying nursing or ancillary personnel upon arrival or departure. Reports immediately any unusual symptoms of patients i.e., fainting or shortness of breath during time of transport. Follow required hand-off communication procedures to ensure proper patient identification. Provide transport equipment as requested or as needed, taking into consideration various factors as the patient's medical state, the urgency of the request, the route to be taken, or the locations involved. Assist patients in and out of vehicles upon arrival/departure. Assist nursing team in transferring patients to or from transport equipment if needed. Attend to the care of documents relating to the patient. Prepare and maintain records of work volume. Perform clerical tasks related to the scheduling and processing necessary to complete all escort activities. Keep up to date knowledge of room and/or clinic changes. Coordinate with volunteers assigned to patient escort, using judgment in distributing assignments. Make adjustments to planned schedules in order to meet changing deadlines and/or priorities set by nursing staff. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work of this position will require extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking up to 8 hours per day, and will require the incumbent to exert moderately heavy physical effort in doing such tasks as occasionally lifting and carrying heavy objects. The incumbent will be required to climb and descend stairs, push and pull wheelchairs and other patient care related equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry equipment and miscellaneous objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Work in in a medical center setting and involves possible exposure to contagious disease which may require protective equipment and precautions. The incumbent will be required to work both indoors and out, and will be exposed to elements typical of the regional climate including temperatures ranging from sub-zero to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and weather conditions including rain, high winds, snow, and ice.
