The Muskogee OK Veteran Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for one Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist position.

Duties

General list of duties but does not include all duties of the position. Receives and interprets requests or instructions for procedures from radiologist or medical officers for accuracy and appropriateness. Independently carries out the requests made by physicians; the technologist determines which scanning protocol and sequences will be scanned based on the patient's clinical history and diagnosis. Prepares room, equipment and materials needed for patient procedures. Properly verifies the patient's identity using two unique identifiers and using active rather than passive identification; follows VHA directives and policies. Make certain that the patient ID band and the request are identical. Explains procedures to patient in a manner that will gain cooperation, understanding, and allay apprehension. Ensure the patient screening process has been performed so that contraindicated materials and medical devices are kept outside the area of the magnet environment. Properly selects patient's information from the HIS/RIS list on the workstation, verifies patient information by performing a timeout process prior to scanning. Obtain pertinent clinical data from the patient, electronic health record, requisition, and interviewing the patient and/or family Uses professional judgement and possess the ability to manipulate and change prescribed protocols and technical factors according to patient necessity, pathology or triage. Ability to identify pathology during scanning; advising the Radiologist of a change in protocol in order to obtain better pathology visualization. Technologist is expected to troubleshoot equipment for error or malfunction. Prepares and administers contrast media, under the direction of the radiologist. Follows prescribing protocols according to requested exam, contrast type, body weight, pathology and according to policy. Follows Infection Control policies during IV insertions, maintains competencies in obtaining IV access and contrast administration. Ability to observe patient's and monitor physiologic changes during the procedure and report complications and unusual events to the radiologist. Screens patients prior to the exam to determine if there are any contraindications to the procedure or to the patient being exposed to a magnetic field. Examples include but are not limited to implanted medical devices, ferrous foreign bodies such as shrapnel or surgical implants, etc. To evaluate if a patient can safely enter the magnetic field, additional radiology imaging may be required to screen for metallic foreign objects and/or implanted medical devices. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-9 Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. KSA Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures; Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure; Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST QUALIFICATION STANDARD, June 26, 2014 Preferred Experience: Must be ARRT (R) (CT) with at least one year of experience This position is above Full Performance Level and will be selected above the Full Performance Level (GS-9). Physical Requirements: Physical demand are usually moderate: lifting objects up to 40 lbs, moving specialized equipment and assisting patients from gurney or wheelchair to a procedure or scan table. Occasionally, the technician assists with moving large patients, but this is done with the assistance of other personnel, or the use of patient lifts, or other safe patient handling equipment to minimize danger to employee and the patient.
