This position is in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Plains Area (PA), Edward T. Schafer Agricultural Research Center located in Fargo, North Dakota. In this position, you will improve the quality and profitability of sugarbeet and potato production through fundamental research on germplasm enhancement, crop protection, and postharvest physiology.

Duties

Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records. Prepares solutions, pesticide, and reagents for use in the laboratory, greenhouse, or field. Contributes ideas towards the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of research related to crops. Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project. Tabulates, statistically analyzes, and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages. Independently initiates action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results or recommends resolution to supervisor.

Qualifications

GS-7 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to molecular biology or crops; statistically analyzing or summarizing data; and maintaining equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures. OR Education: Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Biology, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Crop Sciences or other degrees provided that the coursework places an emphasis on crop related sciences. OR A combination of education and specialized experience as described above. GS-8 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in one or more phases of a crop pathology research process; collecting and analyzing crop samples; and operating, maintaining, calibrating, or modifying specialized equipment. OR Education: Successful completion of two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Biology, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Crop Sciences or other similar degrees provided that the coursework places and emphasis on crop related sciences. OR A combination of education and specialized experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
