Pharmacy Technicians utilize different abilities and knowledge to staff in various areas of both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy service in support of the Edward Hines Jr VA Hospital system and veterans. Under supervision of Pharmacy Technician supervisor or Pharmacist, the technician provides a variety of pharmacy support services based on daily assignments.

Duties

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for filling, dispensing, procurement, storage, preparation, review, distribution, and control of medications/other pharmaceutical products as well as adhering to all policy and regulations enacted for the Pharmacy Service. Major duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Enter, process and fill medication orders or prescriptions, unit dose carts and/or unit stock for scheduled and non-scheduled federal legend drugs, medical devices, over-the-counter products, and supply items. Ensure deliveries of medications are made timely, especially in primary locations of the CBOCs and fluids to the respective locations. Prepare and maintain various logs, records, and reports. Fill automated dispensing devices and routinely clean equipment. Answer and triage window and phone inquiries. Manage stock items, check for outdates/expired items, request reorders, and report issues. Identify cost reduction/cost avoidance activities. Open, sort, and distribute deliveries and prepare packages for mail. Ensure compliance with established pharmacy and medical center policies and procedures. Drive and deliver to all medication areas within the Hines Campus and offsite Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC)s. Work Schedule: 11:30am to 7:00pm, Monday - Friday, days, nights, weekends, holiday as needed for patient care. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. (Creditable Experience: To be creditable, experience must have required use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations, GS-05: Education or Experience: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the one (1) year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least one (1) year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. (GS-4 level KSA's: Ability to process and fill prescriptions under supervision. Ability to operate and maintain dispensing equipment. Ability to operate pharmacy information systems. Ability to maintain appropriate files. Ability to prepare sterile compounds under supervision.) AND In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following GS-5 KSAs: Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems. Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that they are medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. Applicants are required to pass agency Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your driver's license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your valid state-issued driver's license. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the duties of this position. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, frequent twisting/turning, and bending/stooping. Must be able to perform lifting/carrying, pushing, or pulling different types of equipment such as cabinets, carts or supplies weighing at minimum 50 pounds through various terrains.
