The Marion, Illinois VA Health Care System is seeking a full-time Surgical Technician to join Nursing Service as a Surgical Technician. The Surgical Technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team.

Duties

The incumbent demonstrates the knowledge and ability to provide a full range of surgical scrub capabilities for surgical procedures, including general surgeries, orthopedic, eye, ENT, urology and GI Endoscopy procedures. The incumbent will primarily be in the Operating Room and Endoscopy Room. The incumbent serves as a responsible member of the surgical team and interacts with physicians, patients, professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care with members of other services. Must have in-depth knowledge of surgical instrumentation, maintaining sterile field, and scrub duties of surgical procedures related in the care and support of the surgical and/or endoscopy patients. Must know how to troubleshoot surgical/endoscopy equipment to facilitate safe, timely care to our veterans. Operating Room Call is required with this position PLEASE NOTE: This position require Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. If selected, Applicants will provide proof of current certifications prior to employment. Only BLS certification which included Automated External Defibrillator (AED) obtained from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or the Military Treatment Training Network (MTN) will be accepted. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/11/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: GS-5: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position, per 5 CFR ? 300.604, Advancement to positions up to GS-5. Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. GS-6: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 . The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education s described below: GS-5: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: being a member of a surgical team performing assigned surgical technician duties in an operating room under the supervision of a nurse or surgeon and following proper safety precautions while handling surgical equipment and supplies. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.. OR, Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. GS-6: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, being a member of a surgical team performing assigned surgical technician duties in an operating room under the supervision of a nurse or surgeon and following proper safety precautions while handling surgical equipment and supplies. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one-half year of graduate education (or 9 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques etc. OR, Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Preferred Experience: 3-5 years of Surgical Health Technician experience You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Applies Technology to TasksInfection ControlTechnical CompetenceTechnology Application Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work requires extended periods of standing in an uncomfortable, stressful, muscle tasking position during extended surgery. Work requires regular recurring bending, walking, lifting, carrying (45 pounds and over), pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands. Must be able to lift and position during transfer and surgery when the patient is unable to cooperate. Must be able to endure wearing heavy lead aprons for extended periods of time while working under hot operating room lights. Requires ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Additional requirements include far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, depth perception, the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
