Duties

 Responsible for the collection and processing of clinical laboratory specimens. Collect clinical laboratory specimens (human blood) for testing requested by a clinician. Collection of specimens will be accomplished via routine venipuncture and capillary procedures. Collect other body fluids and clinical specimens (i.e. stool, urine, sputum). Instructs patients on proper collection of specimens such as stool and urine for laboratory analysis. Responsible for specimen processing and transport. Processing will include, but not be limited to, specimen centrifugation, aliquoting, and mixing. Assists laboratory staff in a variety of laboratory related activities, including but not limited to, ordering entry into a computerized laboratory information system, preparing laboratory related paperwork, storing and inventorying laboratory supplies.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Basic Requirements: Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Education and Training: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Basic Education and Training requirements qualify applicants for the GL-05 grade level. AND In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants must have the following: Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specialized experience is directly related experience that includes support duties to medical or health personnel, such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in the collection of patient specimens via venipuncture and/or capillary techniques. Experience in instructing patients on proper collection of specimens such as stool and urine for laboratory analysis. Experience in specimen processing to include specimen centrifugations, aliquoting, and mixing. Experience in maintaining inventories of needles and syringes and laboratory supplies. OR Combination of Education & Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. This experience must have equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the major duties of this position as described above. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities. **Your eligibility for consideration will be based on your responses to the questions in the application.**
