This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
Major Duties:
Answers incoming phone calls and secure messages/announcement, email communications. Responds appropriately to patient requests and directs patient clinical questions to the Provider or Registered Nurse. Coordinates between providers, pharmacy, prosthetics, interdisciplinary teams, etc. as needed regarding patient's requests. Retrieves messages from the telephone system and completes appropriate follow-up calls in a timely manner.
Accurately retrieves and responds to secure messages/announcements using assigned menu in accordance with computer security regulations. Assists with mailing letters, patient supplies, receiving fax documentation, and medical records. Assists with performing unit/ patient chart audits and ordering of supplies when necessary.
Provides clinical assistance: Sets up exam rooms and prepares patients for exams by following current rooming guidelines. Assists with special procedures and chaperones provider upon request under the supervision of Provider or Registered Nurse. Assembles equipment and effectively prepares patients for test and treatments.
Measures and records vital signs and chief complaint/s. Reports pertinent changes to provider and documents patient care provided and patient response to treatment. Assists patients/providers with VVC encounters for example: virtually rooming patients prior to scheduled visits.
Assists in the performance of and/or independently performs invasive/non-invasive procedures within scope of practice and proof of competency and training.
Prepares procedural rooms for the performance of GI procedures. Sets up GI procedure rooms with all required items for each procedure. Such as endoscopes, image management system (ProVation), monitoring, and cautery units. Also, for special procedures including Bravo ph. Studies and Fibroscans, and Manometry.
Acts as Clinical Manager for procedures - assisting with checking in patients, obtaining a set of VS, and rooming and/or cleaning before and after a patient has seen a physician.
Prepares Semi Critical and Non-Critical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME'S) in accordance with appropriate Standard Operating procedures.
Plans and discusses each procedure with the GI team professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the GI procedure.
Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the GI procedures and anticipates the needs of the physician and/or fellow by maintaining a high level of concentration.
Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment, as well as follows all RME reprocessing protocol for high level disinfection.
Assists the GI team members with care of the patient, Positioning, Prepping, and obtaining supplies.
Responsible for the accountability for all GI instruments and equipment during the procedure.
Responsible for completing department audits within a timely manner and promptly filing audit reports per HIPPA guidelines once completed.
Assists the physician and/or fellow with instrumentation necessary to perform the required procedure and treatment such as biopsies, brushings, performing polypectomies, inflation of balloon dilators, and injection of lifting agents during GI procedures.
Prepares diagnostic biopsy specimens, assessing the adequacy of each and placing the specimen in the appropriate bottle with the appropriate labeling to meet pathology laboratory specifications during procedures.
Assists in the training process of all new hires, including registered nurses and other MIT's in the operation of equipment, proper techniques, handling of instruments; and GI procedures to include the assistant role of invasive procedures and oversees training of specialty procedures.
Maintains GI Endoscopy/Hepatobiliary Unit by performing designated duties specific to the role as a tech.
Assesses equipment needs and maintains adequate stock of supplies and materials.
Updates personal knowledge regarding current trends in GI procedural technology through continuing education courses.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
Citizenship: Citizenship of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions.
Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition
Grade Determinations:
GS-7 Gastroenterology (GI) Technician:
Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures.
2. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.
3. Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures.
4. Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOP's to clean reusable medical equipment (RME).
5. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.
6. Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies.
7. Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Physical Requirements: The work requires to set up and assist with procedure per bedside. These procedures require setting up equipment less than 5lbs. Any physical demand can be done sitting and/or standing. If there is assistance required to reposition a patient there is staff that can be called upon to assist with repositioning needs.
