This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Bonham, TX. The Rehabilitation Technician (Alcoholism) (Drug Dependence) (Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) performs a variety of therapeutic and supportive technician tasks in assisting physicians and other professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program for alcohol and/or drug-dependent patients.

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The major duties include but are not limited to: Provides continuous safety and security rounding, to include documentation of activities Maintains continuous emergency/disaster readiness and able to engage in first responder role Orients patients to the treatment program and facility behavioral expectations; Observes patients for symptoms, actions, reactions, indications, and contraindications to treatment; Assists in individual or group therapy sessions or in behavior therapy sessions; Provides supportive assistance to patients in all aspects of therapeutic programming Leads patient discussion groups; Provides individual guidance to patients in a non-therapy role; Provides liaison with other agencies or facilities concerned with the treatment and rehabilitation of alcohol or drug-dependent patients; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Tour determined after selection. Current Shifts are Days: 8am to 4:30pm; Evening: 4pm to Midnight; Midnights: Midnight to 8am--subject to change based on service needs. Facility requires 24 hours 7 days per weekcoverage. Will be required to work weekends and holidays. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ In addition to the English Language Proficiency qualify at the GS-6 level, you must meet one of the following requirements: General Experience: You must have at least two (2) years of general experience involved in dealing with others which has demonstrated your aptitude for acquiring the skills and knowledges needed for medical rehabilitation work. For example, experience that demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective person-to-person relationships, skill in oral and written communication, ability to inspire confidence and motivate individuals, and capacity for leadership is qualifying as general experience. This experience may have been gained in positions concerns with health care, counseling, social service, teaching, business, or other similar fields. ~AND~ Specialized Experience: You must have at least two (2) years of specialized experience of which at least one year is equivalent to the GS-5 grade level or higher in the Federal service, or both years are equivalent to the GS-4 grade level or higher in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience which has demonstrated the knowledge, skill and abilities to act as a liaison and intermediary between patients and professional personnel in a residential treatment environment; to understand and cope with the physical and psychological needs of patients; and to guide and assist patients in following a prescribed treatment program. This experience must also have demonstrated that the applicant possesses knowledge, skills and abilities which enable the applicant to understand the problems, actions, reactions, and symptoms of patients seeking substance abuse and/or mental health services and is able to relate to, empathize with, communicate with, motivate, and influence changes in behavior patterns. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented in your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ I have successfully completed one-half academic year of graduate study in psychology at an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ I have an equivalent combination of graduate level education in psychology and experience, as described above, which meets the total experience requirements for the GS-6. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: CommunicationsCritical ThinkingForward ThinkingInterpersonal EffectivenessTechnical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires regularly walking through the domiciliary facility, with additional walking requirements throughout the remainder of the medical center to facilitate patient programming, meetings, training, and other administrative tasks as may required. Walking the exterior of the domiciliary facility is necessary for security rounds. Occasional lifting, carrying, and pushing of moderately heavy items such as boxes and/or carts weighing up to 30lbs. The work is normally inside the residential domiciliary unit with the exception of a once per shift exterior security walk. Activities involve everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions of an office setting; and there are regular and recurring situations where physical and verbal attacks by patients is a possibility.
