Duties
Plans, constructs, and repairs a variety of supply, shipping, and storage containers and similar items.
Based on complex construction plans and rough sketches, builds and constructs odd shaped items used for shipping, storage, supply, bracing, etc.
Selects containers, protective devices, cushioning materials, methods, and techniques needed for packing a variety of tools, parts, equipment, and other items.
Custom packs various items that cannot be made to fit into containers of standard size.
Operates a variety of power tools.

- This position and any future selections from this announcement may be used to fill various shifts located anywhere within DLA Distribution Puget Sound, Washington.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license and be able to operate Material Handling Equipment up to a rated capacity of 10,000 pounds.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state drivers' license/certification to operate government vehicles.
- Licenses/Certifications: Work requires operation of Material Handling Equipment (MHE) and aisle mobile hybrid crane. Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a valid MHE license and must maintain a body weight not in excess of 300 pounds.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must be able to obtain qualifications to certify hazardous material for shipment via all modes of transportation and be able to obtain and maintain required hazardous materials handling certifications.
- Licenses/Certifications: May be required to obtain qualifications to work with radioactive material.
Qualifications
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:
Ability to perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as following basic blueprints to construct and assemble various types of shipping and storage containers and protective bracing and framing supports; select proper fasteners for routine work requirements such as the correct size and type of nails, bolts, and metal braces; perform repetitive and routine work sequences involving preparing, constructing, and assembling standard containers, material handling devices, and assemblies requiring limited measuring, cutting, and joining; requires assistance to do more than routine tasks.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Effort:
Often required to stand, stoop, bend, push, pull, lift, reach, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers with a weight limit up to 90 pounds and/or using lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes.
Working Conditions:
Works in shop area of large warehouse which sometimes is uncomfortably warm, cold, cool, damp and drafty. Occasionally works outside in all types of weather conditions. Exposed to hazards, such as loud noise from tools and machinery; nose, eye and lung irritations from sawdust; possible cuts from sharp blades and tools; skin abrasions and splinters from handling unfinished wood; and possible injuries from flying wooden particles and fasteners.
Required to wear ear, eye, and foot protection at all times while working around the above hazards.
