At the full performance, the Health Technician provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Performs technical work in support of diagnostic tests and procedures. Supports health and medical staff during diagnosis or treatment of patients.

Duties

At the full GS-6 performance grade level duties include: Receives/interprets requests for procedures Secures patient confidence/cooperation Sets-up equipment, determines technical factors, and sets controls Operates equipment and assists medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures Performs diagnostic tests and procedures Positions patients for procedures Handles clerical/administrative support and coordination requirements Maintains patient records Receives and directs patients Determines nature of inquiry and independently responds to all administrative questions Performs persona[ patient care Teaches patients proper health care practices Maintains control records and documents test results Performs health care procedures (such as collection of specimens, applying dressings, adjusting simple supportive equipment) Communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Intermittent, a minimum of 8 hours per pay period (2 weeks). Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician/PD02908A and PD2907 Physical Requirements: Work pace ranges from sedentary to a very rapid pace to include walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Includes lifting and positioning patients m/onto exam position or on/off gurney, and or wheelchair. Work requires specific, but common, physical abilities such as agility and dexterity to position patients for examination or treatment in usual alternate positions for patients with common disabilities. Heavy lifting occasionally may be required to relocate clinic equipment or patients. The work is performed in an indoor clinic setting, which may involve exposure to contagious diseases and the hazards of an automated office. The employee will be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks and gloves for protection against infection. Standard safety precautions are routine. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience that required the application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: performing both clerical and clinical duties in a medical/healthcare environment; answering and directing phone calls; scheduling appointments; documenting medical records; taking and recording vital signs; and collecting and labeling specimens. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. ~OR~ A bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Transcripts required and experience must be detailed. ~OR~ An equivalent combination of specialized experience and post high school education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Your experience must be detailed, and transcripts required.: GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: performing both clerical and clinical duties in a medical/healthcare environment; answering and directing phone calls and/or visitors; scheduling appointments; documenting medical records; taking and recording vital signs; collecting and labeling specimens; setting up patient examination rooms; interviewing patients to obtain medical/personal history; and adhering to infection control procedures. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. ~OR~ One half year (usually 9 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position. above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time graduate education is the number of credit hours that the school attended has determine to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts required. ~OR~ An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Your experience must be detailed, and transcripts required.
