The incumbent will perform computerized axial tomographic scanning of heads and bodies, and a full range of diagnostic and interventional examinations. The technologist will learn how to assist the radiologist under the direction of senior technologists in the performance of procedures that include but a not limited to percutaneous superficial and deep organ biopsies; paracentesis and thoracentesis procedures; intravenous and intraarterial infusions; tissue ablation, and drainage procedures.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs computerized tomography and invasive procedures seeking directions from higher graded technologists and radiologists/residents as needed. Performs portable and general radiography.
Properly labels, secures, and administers radiographic contrast orally, intravenously, or by enema under the supervision of a physician. Properly labels all medications on and off the sterile field during procedures.
Performs basic patient physical examination and review of appropriate laboratory data and tailors the examination and image acquisition on a case-by-case basis.
The Technologist assists the physician in monitoring the patient's physical condition, including vital signs, and assists in monitoring patients receiving conscious sedation.
Receives patient, explains methods of procedure, positions patient and makes exposures necessary for the requested examination.
Evaluate scans while in progress and notifies the radiologist or referring physician of significant CT scans/angiography studies requiring their immediate attention and visualization while patient is undergoing examination.
Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
Performs clinical analysis of data recorded by he computer and performs image capture, retrieval, and archiving functions.
Confers with radiologists to determine requirements of non-standard exams.
Communicates with the customers in a manner which effectively projects a positive, cooperative image of the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Service and treat our customers with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00am - 4:30pmThis Position supports 24/7 operations throughout the calendar year. Work is typically performed on the day shift; however, candidate may be subject to overtime work, shift work, and/or work on rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Subject to call back outside tour of duty.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d)
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable].
Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, completion of 1 year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled which demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics that are directly related to the specific assignment. For GS-09, completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the lower grade level and directly related to the position being filed.*Provide non-award SF-50 as supporting documentation for proof of time in grade.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted) and speed in working. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing I lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
