The position is at the full performance level located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Engineering Service, Structural Shop, Maintenance & Repair Section. The primary purpose of the position is to serve the Veteran under the supervision of the Supervisor, Structural Shop. This includes the functions of the Structural Shop at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The incumbent performs at journeymen level a variety of woodcrafters, carpentry, asbestos containment, masonry, locksmith, painting and roofing tasks where fit, accuracy and space are essential and structural soundness and appearance is essential.
Will work with cabinetry, and furniture for use in medical offices and other uses.
Tasks will require constructing, altering, repairing, and modifying items made of metal, wood, and wood substitutes.
Employee will survey job sites and be responsible in determining the correct dust and asbestos containment requirements prior to the start of the task/job.
Performs the full range of journey level duties associated with a variety of woodcrafters (15%), carpentry (20%), asbestos containment (20%), masonry (5%), locksmith (15%), painting (15%) and roofing (5%) tasks where fit, accuracy and space are essential and structural soundness and appearance is essential.
Will work with cabinetry, furniture, orthopedic devises for use in medical offices and other uses.
Makes job site surveys and recommendations to supervisor on best practices to compete assigned task and determining type/quantity of best-suited material to be used.
Will make site inspections and determination of process to isolate asbestos containing materials prior to the breach of any asbestos containment barrier.
Builds fixtures, shelving, cabinets, interior walls, laths, sheathing, floors, ceiling, and stairs with verbal and/or drawings. Installs window frames, doors, outside trims, inside trims.
Maintains, repairs, and alters the interior and exterior structures built from concrete, block, ceramic tiles by preparing and spreading mortar or adhesive; cutting, shaping, and laying blocks and tiles; and finishing joints.
Performs plastering duties.
Paints a variety of surfaces, such as interiors and exteriors of buildings and/or stationary mobile equipment, where appearance as well as surface protections are important.
Maintains, installs, repairs, and weatherproof roofs using roofing accessories, roofing felt, asphalt, and various other roofing coatings and materials.
Uses tools and power equipment such as handsaws, power saws, skill saws, scaffolding, and fine surface materials, including blocks, tiles, metal, wood and wood substitutes. Is responsible for maintaining tools and equipment in good working condition.
Must troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and fully install a wide variety of commercial locking devices of varied manufacturers. Must assist management in the capabilities and selection of locking devices for solving security problems.
Assembles/disassembles cubicles to include creating or working from complex drawings as a layout of the entire floor plan, ensuring assembly is consistent with safety standards, local standards, and manufacturing standards.
Incumbent is responsible for full implementation and continuous updating of the Engineering Service AEMS/MERS systems that apply to the Structural Shop. To accomplish work, data entry will require an understanding of the operation of the terminals, printers, and appropriate software.
Stores and categorizes unused products consistent with local warehouse standards, ensuring efficient space utilization. Complete and sign all documentation associated with receiving, installing, modification of system furniture parts and systems. Keep and maintain a current inventory of all systems furniture and non-modular office furniture parts and equipment.
Work Schedule: Sat/Sun 12:00pm to 8:30pm and M/Th/F 3:00pm to 11:30pm

Physical Requirements: May handle or carry weights up to 90 pounds, and occasionally more. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces that can be found at or in transit to or from work sites. May receive minor cuts and abrasions while performing these duties. Must be able to work from ladders and platforms, and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent will be exposed to asbestos containing areas. Incumbent must follow VASDHS Medical Center Memorandum 00-52, Airborne Asbestos Protection.
