This position is located in the Dietetics Services Department of the Whiteriver Service Unit, Whiteriver, Arizona.
The Dietitian will work with the Inpatient Care program and collaboratively with the Ambulatory Care Programs and Community Nutritionist
based on nutritional needs, disease entities, cultural patterns, and available resources. The incumbent will be supervised by the Supervisory Dietitian.
Duties
Develops long-range plans and objectives concerning nutrition and dietetic services that are needed by the inpatients, as well as occasional ambulatory patients, and their families and the outlying communities served by the Whiteriver Service Unit.
Develops methods and procedures for effective consultation services by identifying the nutritional needs, cultural patterns, and available resources.
Evaluates nutritional habits, food purchasing practices and resources for purchasing food availability to clients/communities.
Works closely with community nutritionist and tribal health departments to assess community nutritional needs and to provide services to meet those nutritional needs.
Acts as a liaison coordinating nutritional care activities with the inpatient Staff Community Support Services staff, the Nutrition and Dietary Department, and various agencies providing care to the Whiteriver Service Unit.
Provides nutritional education to individuals and families so patient can achieve defined outcomes.
Assist with the ongoing review of documents, such as clinical nutritional formulary, diet manual, patient educational materials, etc.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS, GS-0630, Dietitian: You must meet one of the following requirements to qualify for the 0630 Dietitian series.
Completion of a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) which was formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. OR
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly known as the ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. OR
Professional Registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). (Must provide a copy of registration with the application.) OR
You are a current employee currently assigned to positions in this occupational series (0630) as of September 2017.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
For GS-09 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of Specialized Experience: Applying professional knowledge of the science of nutrition and applying the principles, practices and procedures to provide nutritional care to patients at long term care facilities, hospitals, community/public health facilities, nutrition programs, food and nutrition industry, sports nutrition, business and research; counseling on dietary plans based on patient's nutritional needs, adapting plans to meet individual's therapeutic needs and consulting with other healthcare team members on patient nutritional care; providing education and training on professional standards and requirements to provide nutritional care to patients; assess patient's dietary habits and nutritional status to conform with physician's diet prescription and to develop a diet plan and influence patients to follow diet plan to promote social and physical well-being of patients. OR
Completion of (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR
Possess a combination of graduate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for the GS-09 grade level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
For GS-11 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of Specialized Experience: Applying professional knowledge, concepts, principles and methodologies of the science of nutrition and applying the principles, practices and procedures to provide optimal nutrition care to patients according to established and specific procedures; planning, organizing, coordinating and evaluating nutrition programs; assessing nutritional needs and therapeutic diets for individuals or groups located in hospitals, community, care facilities according to nutritional needs; consulting with other healthcare team members on patient nutritional care; used judgement, initiative and resources in deviating from established methods; influencing or persuading people, resolving problems utilizing professional knowledge of dietetic principles, practices and procedures; applying knowledge of medical practices, effects of medication and the effects of other treatment modalities that affect patient's diet, evaluate diet habits, etc. to counsel, teach and educate importance of quality food, physician's diet prescription to promote social and physical well-being of patients; served as a resource person on nutritional requirements and research related to diseases and prevention of such.

Completion of (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
OR
Possess a combination of graduate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for the GS-11 grade level .In additional to the meeting the Individual Occupational Requirements and the Minimum Qualifications for the grade levels above, the IHS licensure policy (PHS instructions 338-3) requires IHS Dietitians to possess and maintain current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration listed below.
Professional Registration Requirement: GS-0630 Series for Dietitians: The IHS licensure policy (PHS instructions 338-3) requires IHS Dietitians to possess and maintain current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
A current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States is a requirement for this position.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
