The Division of Field Operations is responsible for carrying out investigative, compliance, consumer information and public affairs activities. We encourage voluntary industry compliance with the laws and regulations administered by the Commission, identify product related incidents, investigate selected injuries or deaths associated with consumer products, and implement wide-ranging public information and education programs designed to reduce consumer product injuries.

Duties

Product Safety Investigators and "The Field" are part of the Office of Compliance and Field Operations. Investigators serve as the Commission's front line to the public and have a crucial role in protecting America's families from unsafe consumer products. Investigators are required to work remotely full-time from home. Although investigators are based in their homes, they routinely perform duties outside of the home office. Investigators exercise considerable independence in scheduling their day-to-day activities. Additionally, most work is done independently, and not in a team setting. Field investigators maintain an investigative case load and perform administrative tasks with firm due dates. Excellent time management skills are a requirement.

  • Selectee will work remotely full-time from their residence.
  • Selectee must reside within 35 miles of downtown Atlanta, GA.

Qualifications

All Candidates must possess the Selective Placement Factor (SPF) to receive consideration for this position.  The SPF required for this position is: experience and/or education in conducting formal or official inspections and/or investigations of one or more of the following types: safety investigations, fire investigations, regulatory/civil/criminal investigations, background investigations, death investigations, or regulatory inspections. In addition to the SPF, applicants qualifying based on experience must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: GS-9: Conduct investigations and/or inspections, interviews, gather data, and prepare written reports in order to support and develop cases. GS-11: Conduct investigations and/or inspections, interviews, gather data, and prepare written reports in order to independently support and develop cases, conduct oral presentations, and collect samples or evidence. Evidence of the above specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held.  Your resume is the key means we have for evaluating your skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Applicants must meet the qualifications for this position by the closing date of this announcement.

Education

Applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as indicated below:

GS-9: Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL. B or J.D., if related OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-7.

GS-11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-9.
