This position is for a Pharmacy Technician in the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP). Incumbent is a highly skilled technician and works under minimal supervision by an assigned supervisory. This position requires the candidate to be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and maintains their national Pharmacy Technician Recertification.
Duties
Major duties:
The Pharmacy Technician will cover the duties of the GS-5 and must possess the skills to perform a full range of technical pharmacy duties as well as associated administrative duties in an independent manner to support the pharmaceutical care of the Veterans.
1. Performs substantially in repacking bulk pharmaceuticals.
2. Replenishes pharmacy stock in automated pharmacy equipment, utilizing the computer inventory system.
3. Receives supplies, checks for shortages, tampering, breakage, deterioration, or expiration.
4. Accurately interprets and correctly fills prescription in all areas of CMOP.
5. Assists with gathering and monitoring workload data for projecting staffing needs.
6. Participates in and supports the use of automated dispensing systems which improve productivity, increases efficiency and assists efforts in ensuring timeliness of processing.
7. Assists with basic and complex inventorying activities and checks for outdated or unsuitable quality of pharmaceuticals.
8. Provides training for technicians, pharmacists, inspectors, students, etc.
9. Follows written instructions with aseptic techniques for hazardous material handling such as oncology agents.
10.Relationships with management and co-workers are consistently courteous, respectful and cooperative in nature.
11. Sensitivity to the special needs of all patients/customers in respect to age, developmental requirements, and culturally related factors must be consistently achieved.
12. The incumbent uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-6.
Experience: One year experience at the next lower level (GS5), and must fully meet the KSA's at the next lower grade.
1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing decives and equipment.
2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
Resume must include hours worked per week for work experience credit.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) required for the GS-6 grade level:
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
