The position is that of a Maintenance Mechanic Worker - Painter/Plasterer/Carpenter, WG-4749-7, in the Facility Maintenance Service (FMS) at the VA Central Western Health Care System located in Leeds MA. Approximately 40% of the incumbent's work in this position will involve painting, 30% will involve plastering/wall repair, and 30% will involve carpentry.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES:
The incumbent works on general maintenance and repair (M&R) work on interior and exterior surfaces at the Medical Center. Duties include work involved in constructing, altering, maintaining and repairing buildings, structures, roofs, walls, offices, medical rooms, cabinets, hand rails and other items using wood, wood substitutes, sheet metal, concrete, plaster, drywall, metal framing & sheathing and composite building materials. He/she must have a general knowledge of carpentry, roofing, painting and sheet metal work. Shares work with higher grade employees when assigned to journeyman level work. During severe weather, the incumbent must be able to remove heavy snow and ice dams from all the sloped & flat roofs up to 3 stories high across the medical campus. To ensure that our patients have a safe and comfortable environment, the incumbent needs to work well both on his/her own and as a team member, which includes other duties as assigned to reach department goals.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be physically fit to work in temperature extremes from hot to cold. He/she must be able to frequently lift & carry 50lbs without assistance and occasionally 100lbs with assistance. Work requires considerable bending, kneeling stooping and work above shoulder height 75% of the time. This position generally requires working with heavy materials, cramped work spaces and unconditioned work spaces both inside and outdoors such as mechanical rooms, steam tunnels, roofs and renovation spaces. Strenuous physical exertion is required when handling heavy/bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, and other building/construction materials or while using portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions.
