This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. This position functions as a conservation technician in the Document Conservation Laboratory (RXC), in the office of Preservation Programs (RX) of the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The position contributes to the conservation and preservation of documents, bound volumes, and photographs held by NARA.
Duties
As a Conservator Technician, you will:
Perform treatment on groups of archival records and develops safe and efficient mechanisms for handling multiple items.
Document treatments performed via checklists and narrative reports. Photographic documentation carried out as necessary.
Handle archival records and performs all conservation treatment in conformance with procedures and standards established by the supervisory conservator.
Maintain laboratory stock solutions and supplies.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience for the GS-7 is one year of experience at the GS-06 level, or equivalent, in either public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience must include:
Examining records to recognize the fragility and characteristics of paper and other archival media and binding materials. Examples of this experience include: Demonstrating knowledge of the history of paper manufacture and assessing the condition of paper documents by describing damages through a survey or report.
AND
Determining vulnerable parts of records that need protection or stabilization and carrying out conservation treatments on archival records in a laboratory setting while adhering to instructions to ensure that documents are handled and treated in conformance with standard procedures. Examples of this experience include: Mending torn paper using long-fibered paper and wheat starch paste, humidification and flattening of rolled documents and fabrication of custom boxes for the storage of paper records.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks.
