You will serve as a MACHINIST in the Mechanical Shop (Code 930) Production Resources Department Manager (Code 901), Production Resources Department (Code 900) at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.
Duties
You will set-up multiple operations/machines utilizing control surfaces for production runs.
You will utilize specialty machinery such as tool and cutter grinder, hobs, and thread mills to produce special, unique, or difficult parts.
You will coordinate and arrange support with other work sections and trades as determined to accomplish assigned tasks.
You will independently interpret and translate work orders, drawings, and specifications that are often lacking in such items as dimensions, tolerances, and types of fits and finishes.
You will control quality on assigned jobs and initiates in process changes to maintain it.

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below:
Ability using computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools; Ability handling raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials; Ability machining surfaces of unusual or compound angles; Ability setting up and preparing numerical control machines (CNC) for proper orientation; Ability providing instruction and training to numerical machine tool operators; Ability troubleshooting programs pertaining to Computer Numerical Control machines (CNC), first time run programs, shop floor edits to exiting part programs fixture manufacturing, repairing and overhauling.
Ability handling raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials; Experience machining surfaces of unusual or compound angles.
Ability Experience using computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
