This position is located in the Structures Shop, Facilities Management Service of the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital, Hines, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide locksmith service. The Locksmith has a direct impact on the physical security of the facility.

Duties

The primary purpose of this position is performing work involved with repairing, overhauling, modifying, testing, and installing a variety of locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations. The work includes the manufacture and duplication of keys and the keying and combination of locking mechanisms. The incumbent will also perform all types of carpenter construction work such as framework and installation of construction work. The incumbent must perform all types of carpenter construction work such as framework; installation of rafters, doors, stairs, finished paneling, and drywall; drywall taping and finishing; installation of windows, demountable partitions, interior and exterior trim, trusses, and beams; fabrication of concrete forms, concrete pouring and finishing; installation of siding, PVC wall covering, high pressure laminate wall covering, PVC handrails, corner guards, and demolition work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/18/2023. Your resume must provide evidence of your ability to perform the duties of a Locksmith without more than normal supervision. This includes, but is not limited to: Knowledge of the full range of locking devices and their component parts to include internal structure and operating characteristics of a wide variety of locking systems from various manufacturers; ability to perform visual and operations tests to locate trouble and determine method for opening and repairing malfunctioning devices; skill to use a variety of tools and skill to work with total accuracy to preclude the destruction of expensive security systems or safes vaults; able to read, interpret, apply technical manuals, manufacturer's diagrams/specifications, and be able to prepare diagrams to identify dimensions or special parts requirements; know shop math to include fractions; ability to provide expert knowledge of locks and locksmithing to serve as a consultant to management; knowledge and skill to design and install locks/locking systems to meet special security requirements that require the significant modification and adaptation of locking mechanisms for uses to which they were not specifically designed; and the ability to fabricate tools and parts from a variety of materials, using welding equipment, hand tools and power tools such as grinders, lathes, milling machines, and drill presses. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work assignments require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling for prolonged periods as well as working in cramped and awkward positions. Incumbent is required to lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area. Occasionally work is done outside in inclement weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and serious burns.
