About the Position: Operates control systems for the automated ranges in the Small Arms Range towers during day and night-time live-fire training scenarios. Up-loads software to personal computer to operate target systems for range activity support. Monitors systems by visually observing target operations, computer printouts and console indicators. Builds scenarios, up-loads and modifies computer software for control target exposures.

Duties

Observes, monitors and makes recommendations to range users on firing activities, including visibility requirements conducted on small arms ranges (SAR). Identifies maintenance requirements and generates work order requests (DA Form 4283) to range maintenance section to correct range problems. Coordinates maintenance support for malfunctioning target devices or control systems. Monitors and enforces safety and inspection standards and policy and regulatory restrictions throughout the range and training areas. Manages the inspection of facilities, ammunition storage, facilities and equipment cleanup, and property accountability.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • May be required to pass the Range Operations Professional Development course, Inter-Service Range Safety Course (Intermediate) within one year of employment IAW Training Circular TC 25-8, Training Ranges.
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Alaska driver's license.
  • Must have normal depth perception and color vision.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • Incumbent is subject to Recall or may be required to report for duty during adverse weather or in times of national disaster to preclude additional loss or damage to resources at the range facility.
  • May be subject to performing Temporary Duty travel (TDY) at other than the primary worksite as mission dictates (Less than 25% of time).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in the operation of range live fire training AND the ability to build scenarios, up-loads and modify computer software for controlling target exposures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: I have successfully completed a masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in engineering, industrial arts, property management, or business administration. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Facilities ManagementFacilities Operations and MaintenanceFacilities Reporting and Record-Keeping Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
