This position is located in the Electric Shop of the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Facilities Management Service of the New Mexico VA Health Care System. The primary purpose of the Electrician position is to perform preventative maintenance, testing, and repairs on electrical equipment and systems located throughout the facility.

Duties

Repairs or replaces wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools. Troubleshoots circuits, controls and systems to locate, repair and replace defective components. Installs and repairs distribution panels, boxes, and various electrical systems. Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains electrical lines, circuits, generator systems. Prepares sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes Interprets and applies manufacturer's handbooks, technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams to determine material, tools, and equipment needed Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, such as oscilloscopes, ammeters, or test lamps. Inspects electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/23/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Effort: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the electrical systems requiring attention that are in cramped, dirty, and hard to reach locations. The work involves prolonged crouching and standing, and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment ladders, scaffolding parts and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Electricians are exposed to a variety of weather conditions both in winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. The incumbent must give full consideration to patients, visitors, and employees in the vicinity of the work area. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, ,cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to work in the vicinity of asbestos containing materials. The incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.
