This position is located at the Oscar G Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain MI, Engineering Service, and Repair Section. The Incumbent performs Journey-level Painter, carpenter and sign making, alterations and installation duties.
Duties
This position is located at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain, Michigan, in the Engineering Service, Maintenance & Repair Section. The incumbent performs journey-level painter, carpenter and sign making, alteration and installation duties.
Major Duties:
Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required, e.g., glossy finish, grained effect, or a finish that must meet specified thicknesses and levels.
Lays drop cloths to protect furniture, floors and other equipment before painting.
Applies paints, stains, varnishes, lacquers, prepared waxes, etc., using brushes, rollers, spray guns, and graining devices
Performs carpentry tasks such as alterations and/or remodeling which include removing and installing partitions, additions to buildings, and opening of walls for installation.
Works from blueprints and/or oral instructions from the supervisor to cut lumber to size for ceiling and floor plates, studs, braces, headers, framework for doors and windows.
Performs other carpentry work such as installing baseboards, wainscoting, molding, suspended ceilings, picture frames, exterior and interior stairs, fabricating and installing porches.
Uses automated sign label machine to fabricate signs according to work order and project requirements.
Makes stencils, templates or patterns needed to reproduce designs or shapes.
Produces and installs signs by lettering, stenciling, and painting
Installs and finishes drywall including taping, applying joint compound, sanding and painting.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30pm other shifts may be required on a temporary basis

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside. Dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. The employee sometimes works outside in bad weather. Occasionally, the employee may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that may be heavy and uncomfortable. Some work is performed in shop areas where the employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and other hazards associated with woodworking. The employee is subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on or around ladders and scaffolds. Fumes from various glues, paints and solvents are usually present. The employee may work outside in bad weather during preparation or installation of various signs. May occasionally be required to lift items up to 50 pounds without assistance.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
