This position is located in Natural Resources Stewardship and Science, in the Biological Resources Division.
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
Duties
The major duties of the Geographer/Biologist/Physical Scientist/Cartographer position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Builds, adapts, modifies, and maintains geospatial databases using ESRI products.
Maintains records and manages large quantities of field collected data from vegetation observations from various data collection methods.
Collects, collates, and keeps databases current with published scientific literature, synthesizes information and summaries in oral and written formats.
Assists with current data collection methods for vegetation management metrics using geospatial technology, mobile platforms, and discipline-related applications.
Works cooperatively with scientists and land managers across the agency and with external partners.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/21/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
This is an Interdisciplinary GIS Specialist position, you must meet the BASIC educational requirement for at least ONE series *AND* meet the Specialized Experience and/or Education in order to qualify for this position.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Geographer GS-0150:
A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. Note: You must submit your transcripts. OR
B: Have a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Note: You must submit your transcripts.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Biologist GS-0401:
A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Note: You must submit your transcripts. OR
B: Have a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Note: You must submit your transcripts.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Physical Scientist GS-1301:
A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. Note: You must submit your transcripts. OR
B: Have a combination of education and experience in one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Note: You must submit your transcripts.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Cartographer GS-1370:
A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR
B: Have a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicants whose experience in cartography was in the Federal service may have gained this experience by working in an occupational series other than GS-1370. Occupations in which experience may have been gained include Geography, GS-150; Civil Engineering, GS-810; General Physical Science, GS-1301; Geodesy, GS-1372; and Land Surveying, GS-1373.

To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess at least two of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
Assisting with the management of the GIS database and database management system.
Working as biological technician or equivalent inputting data or performing application using GIS/GPS practices on cultural or natural resource conservation, or land management.
Serving as assistant technician or equivalent working to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data and other resource management information. You must include hours per week worked. OR
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two (2) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate. You must include transcripts. OR
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
