The New Mexico VA Healthcare Network is recruiting for a Supervisory Dietitian responsible for the Nutrition and Food Service (N&FS) section. The incumbent provides professional and management support, which includes planning, implementing and directing the food production and service.
Duties
Manages the Food Service and Production operation that may include various cooking methods including conventional (scratch) cooking and convenience cooking.
Evaluates the current food production and service system and makes appropriate and effective recommendations to the Chief and Assistant Chief Nutrition & Food Services to improve services provided to patients, reduce or stabilize cost of services, improve quality of food services and performance of human resources in the administrative section.
Develops and annually reviews standard operating procedures that relate to the administrative section. Coordinates programs with nursing and other services.
Develops strategic planning goals and objectives for the administrative section.
Prepares financial reports and comparative data for the formulation of subsequent fiscal year's budget and forecasts.
Responsible for collecting, collating, and reporting benchmarking data.
Serves as the Chair of the N&FS Pl Committee, which involves developing and spearheading the Service Pl plan and maintaining records of all committee functions
Responsible to ensure compliance with national and VISN performance standards and measures, both clinical and administrative.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Registration: All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Exception for Dietitians who do not possess the RDN credential: Non-credentialed Dietitians who meet the basic qualification requirements and have fulfilled the requirements below, but do not possess the RDN credential, may be given a temporary full-time appointment not to exceed one year under the authority of 38 U.S.C. ? 7405(c)(2). Non-credentialed Dietitians may only be appointed at the GS-07 or GS-09 grade level and may not be promoted/converted until they obtain their RDN credential.
Non-credentialed Dietitians must have fulfilled each of the following:
Earned a bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college, university or foreign equivalent (refer to ii below).
Completed an ACEND? accredited experiential or supervised practice program and provide a verification statement from the program director that conveys eligibility to take the CDR registration exam as a prospective RDN. A list of ACEND? accredited programs is located on the ACEND? website or at ACEND Accredited Programs Directory.
Foreign Education. To be creditable, college and/or university degrees earned outside the U.S and its territories must be evaluated by ACEND? and meet ACEND?'s International Dietitian Education standards which are designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and competencies to sit for the CDR credentialing exam.
Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must possess the following grade requirements.
GS-13 Supervisory Dietitian (Food Operations): Applicants must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12). In addition, applicants must meet the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of business administration practices such as budget planning, contracting and food and supply purchasing to successfully operate a food service program.
Skill in written communication to include policy development and standard operating procedures.
Skill in strategic planning to develop goals, objectives and action plans.
Skill in analyzing data to monitor progress towards improving and sustaining outcomes.
Ability to supervise subordinate staff (i.e., plan, organize, delegate, direct, control and review activities and performance)
.Ability to negotiate.
GS-12 Supervisory Dietitian (Food Operations): Applicants must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). In addition, applicants must meet the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of standards to assess staff compliance and implement performance improvements.
Skill in establishing goals and objectives to coordinate activities, evaluate accomplishments and solve problems.
Skill in applying nutritional knowledge to ensure menus meet nutrition standards.
Ability to utilize Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines in order to develop, implement and coordinate best practices.
Ability to serve as a food operations expert, providing technical guidance, direction and staff development.
Ability to supervise subordinate staff (i.e., plan, organize, delegate, direct, control and review activities and performance).
Ability to analyze data in order to recommend allocation of resources.
Preferred Experience: Registered Nutrition Dietitian, Experience in healthcare kitchen management

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, pushing, balancing, stooping, reaching, or similar activities as may be performed in food service operations and clinical management; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as food supplies or equipment. The work requires specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above average agility and dexterity. Possess the physical demeanor/skills to work with ill patients and in an environment where employee may be unknowingly exposed to contagious disease.
