Duties
Code disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory settings and specialties.
Performs qualitative analysis to ensure accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data.
Perform technically complex medical record coding for outpatient medical conditions.
Audit medical/specialty diagnoses and procedures reported by providers and applies technical Department of Defense (DoD) coding requirements.
Conducts training classes for clinical staff pertaining to coding and documentation.
Requirements
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

GS-08: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in applying, rules, procedures, to make recommendations to improve procedures for compiling and retrieving medical records information; identify specific clinical findings, support existing diagnoses, or substantiate listing additional diagnoses in the medical record; code complicated medical records that are difficult to classify; gather and represent data graphically; conduct internal audits assist in training providers, clerical staff and coding trainees. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes skill in applying, a wide-ranging body of rules, procedures, and operations; medical terminology, procedures, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes; ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM diagnosis, CPT procedural, evaluation, and management, coding techniques; and computerized data entry and retrieval systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

GS-06: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes intermediate knowledge of basic rules, procedures, and operations to compile and retrieve medical records information to code in medical record coding system, posses knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, anatomy, physiology, and disease. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coding basic medical records; by gathering and represent data graphically to manage medical records, and inputting them into a medical record coding system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
*This position recommends that you be a Registered Record Administrator (RRA) or certified by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Technician (RHIT), or be a certified coding specialist CCS, or CCS-P, or credentialed by American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) CPC Certified Professional Coder, CPC-H,CPC-P, or CPC-A.*
Education
