About the Position: This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD, in the Department Of Medicine, Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic. As a Clinical Nurse, you will primarily function as a staff nurse on an 6-Bed Pediatric Hematology Oncology Unit.

Duties
Provide specialized, professional, nursing care to pediatric and adolescent hematology and oncology patients.
Serve as mentor, resource person, and preceptor to newly assigned hematology/oncology staff.
Plan, delegate, and direct nursing care based on patient care requirements and staff skill levels.
Respond to life threatening situations in accordance with nursing standards of practice and established policies and procedures.
Instruct patients and family members regarding disease processes and provide emotional support, as needed.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- This position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- This position requires that you obtain and maintain an ONS Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Provider Card.
- This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Specialist/Hematology/Oncology):
Education: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification at the time of application.)
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification with your application package.)
Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017, or before. You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Experience: At least one or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes: providing professional nursing care to hematology and/or oncology patients; administering chemotherapy/biotherapy medications; and educating patients and/or family members on related disease process and/or chemotherapeutic agent side effects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
