This position is assigned to the Richmond, Virginia, Radiology Service, General Radiology section within the Central Virginia VA Healthcare System. The incumbent will serve as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist in this developmental assignment until the full performance level of target GS-647-08 is reached. The incumbent will perform the full spectrum of radiographic & fluoroscopic examinations, explains method of procedure, and obtains signed consents for examinations with contrast media.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Performs procedures such as fluoroscopy, gastrointestinal examinations, conventional plain film radiography, myelography, fluoroscopic guided, interventional procedures, portable radiography, digital radiography, and operating room radiography. Anticipates imaging, and equipment needs before and during the procedure, follows the progress of the procedure and facilitates an efficient flow. Performs examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for routine physical examinations and for diagnosis of illness or of injuries of accident victims. Monitors the examination by checking the computation, performance, and results of the selected parameters to obtain the best diagnostic computer-generated data and images. Reviews requests for appropriateness before performing exams. Incumbent uses appropriateness criteria, the clinical history provided on the request, interviews the patient, reviews the patient chart, or contacts the ordering clinician as needed for clarification. Sets up the x-ray room assuring sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, and other required equipment are present and laid out. Prepares and administers contrast material orally, by enema, or intravenously under radiologist supervision Work Schedule: M-F 8:00 am- 4:30pm. This Position supports 24/7 operations throughout the calendar year. Work is typically performed on the day shift; however, candidate may be subject to overtime work, shift work, and/or work on rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Physical Requirements. English Language Proficiency * This occupation has a positive educational requirement. Transcripts are due at time of application so that education can be verified for qualification purposes* Positive Educational Requirement: A specific educational requirement that all individuals in a given occupation have completed in order to enter the occupation. This may be defined in terms of a specific degree (associate, bachelors, masters, or doctoral) or in terms of specific coursework. Under no circumstances will the educational or credential requirement be waived for those occupations with a positive education requirement, or when specific credentials are identified as necessary to meet minimum requirements.[IAW VA Handbook 5005 Part II Appendix G17] Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, completion of 1 year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled which demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics that are directly related to the specific assignment. For GS-06/7/8, completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the lower grade level and directly related to the position being filed. Provide non-award SF-50 as documentation for proof of time in grade. References: VA Handbook 5005 Part II Appendix G25 & G17 Physical Requirements: The physical demand of the work includes Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing lead apron for long periods of time.
