The incumbent serves as an Experience Assistant (Ambassador) for the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) and Ambassador Service with primary duties and responsibilities supporting the CDCE and Ambassador Program Service Chief. The position is located within CDCE and Ambassador Service under the Deputy Director for TVHS.
Duties
You will carry out required performance of this position as an Experience Assistant, Ambassador Service to the CDCE and Ambassador Service office at TVHS. This program is designed to provide our Veteran patients, their families and visitors with staff who can respond quickly to inquiries, identify problems, and offers assistance when our customers do not know how to access medical center information, programs and/or services.
Job Duties include, but are not limited to:
Provide advisory and technical assistance and escort to patient and staff regarding general hospital information.
Provide the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures
Provide administrative function to include, but not limited to handling written correspondence and telephone inquiries and training.
Provide input for the preparation of inquiries requiring written correspondence such as congressional inquiries.
Respond to question from patients concerning various services.
Consistently communicate and treat customers in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner.
Receive and handle concerns ensuring quality service is rendered in a timely, competent and caring manner.
Assist in the explanation of procedures, position patient for desired results, and cushion and shield patient as appropriate.
Research problems and/or review issues and requests related to information regarding provisions in the medical center, eligibility, etc., clarify issues, and evaluation the need for additional information.
Perform general administrative support related to staff, volunteers and patients.
Assist in giving orientation to new employees.
Push wheelchairs and gurneys, assist with morgue runs and other medical equipment as necessary.
Transport patients to and from a connecting medical center.
Provides coverage, as needed, for the transportation of Veteran patients both on campus and between campuses serviced by TVHS

NOTE: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed above represent the full performance level of GS-5. At the GS-04 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-5.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

To qualify for this position at the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following:
General Experience: Applicants must have one year of general experience. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.OR,
Substitution of Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed 2 years of education above high school level in any field. (Copy of Education Transcript is Required) OR,
Combination of Experience and Education: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.. (Copy of Education Transcript is Required)
To qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. In this particular position, examples of specialized experience include: Answering phones and responding to customer inquiries; Providing clerical and/or administration support in a medical center or hospital; Transporting and escorting patients to clinics; Pushing wheelchairs, gurneys and other medical equipment; Lifting patients. OR,
Substitution of Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Combination of Experience and Education: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of the required experience and education. Education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (Transcript required).

Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time and sitting at computer for long periods of time. The work is primarily physical with requires standing, walking bending, lifting, kneeling, and pushing wheelchairs, transport chairs, gurneys, stretchers, medical beds, and other medical equipment. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work requires heavy lifting of equipment or patients. The incumbent must be able to operate a vehicle in a sitting position for prolonged periods of time in extreme weather conditions.
Work Environment: Work is performed in a medical center responsible for treating patients with a wide variety of medical problems: psychiatric diagnoses. Work is performed in an outdoor setting in a wide variety of environmental conditions and in an indoor setting. The incumbent may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions are sometimes necessary.
