About the Position: As a Marine Traffic Controller, you will direct all vessel traffic transiting the canal taking into consideration traffic type and density, prevailing conditions and the limitation of water depth and vertical clearance of the bridges. You will monitor all activity at the canal, dispatch ranger and boat patrols throughout the area, and contact public safety agencies to assist with response to accidents, vessel distress calls, alarms and other emergencies.

Duties

Serve as central marine traffic controller and primary decision maker for all vessels transiting, mooring, and docking within Cape Cod Canal waterway. Utilize current condition and forecasted data to determine the need for the advisability of closing the New Bedford Barrier gates to prevent flooding. Assist management with variety of administrative tasks in support of Navigation, Recreation and Flood Risk Management program execution. Direct all marine traffic, including permitting two-way traffic passing situations. Serve as focal point for centralized communication, coordination, and dispatch of ranger and boat patrols. Monitor safety and integrity of government-owned buildings and property.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Marine Transportation, Marine Affairs, or Marine Engineering. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Controlling movement of vessels through confined waterways; 2) Communicating orally using marine radio communication equipment; AND 3) Coordinating assistance for vessels in distress. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Marine Transportation, Marine Affairs, or Marine Engineering. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
