This position is with the U. S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Directorate of Standards and Guidance (DSG), located in Washington, D.C. This position is at the full performance level. This position is inside the bargaining unit. Additional selections may be made from this job announcement. This is NOT a remote position. Selectee will be expected to report to the office.

Duties

Leads or participates in the DSG team effort to develop proposed and final regulatory text and supporting analyses for safety and health standards, and develops guidance products on workplace health hazards. Writes and edits content for proposed and final rules, requests for information, and other Federal Register publications, including proposed and final regulatory text and supporting analyses. Investigates a broad range of areas such as epidemiology, toxicology, biology, biostatistics and industrial hygiene. Initiates, conducts or directs scientific studies and investigations. Researches, proposes, and/or participates in the formulation of innovative initiatives and programs to assist with compliance with OSHA standards and regulations. Identifies sources of information needed to support a project by reviewing published literature and other scientific information.

Qualifications

This position has an Individual Occupational Requirement. You must meet both the Basic Requirements and the Specialized Experience to qualify for a Health Scientist position, as described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, General Health Science Series, 0601 General Medical and Healthcare positions. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0600/general-health-science-series-0601/ Basic Requirement: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. AND Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-12 in the Federal Service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Implementing knowledge of the concepts, principles or practices in the fields of epidemiology, toxicology, biochemistry, biostatistics, public health or risk assessment to detect and manage chemical or physical hazards; making recommendations for the development of national occupational safety and health hazard guidance; participating in the research of information and data to develop content for publications on occupational safety and health topics.
