About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Surgery (APU/SAME DAY SURGERY/PACU) at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) with the Defense Health Agency, Indo-Pacific Market, Hawaii Region.
The incumbent of this position works as a charge nurse, performing a variety of administrative/floor duties as an extension and in support of the head nurse.

Duties
Makes nursing care assignments to various skill levels of professional and nonprofessional personnel.
Assigns staff to patient care duties based on patient condition and expertise of staff.
Monitors and oversees staff performance to assure work is accomplished timely.
Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients based on physician's medical care plan and the physical, mental and emotional needs of the patient.
Administers oxygen, IV fluid, blood transfusion and prescribed oral, subcutaneous and intramuscular medications.
Sets up, operates and monitors specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, respirators, defibrillators, etc.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations and for evidence of tuberculosis unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs.
- Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- This position requires the use of protective clothing and/or uniform.

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical/Medical-Surgical):
Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. (Note: You must attach a copy of your License).
Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Education and Experience: Possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level). Professional Nursing Experience is defined as: One year of experience which includes which includes providing nursing care to medical-surgical patients, educating patients, and maintaining patient records.
OR
Education: Successful completion of two and a half years of progressively higher level graduate education leading towards a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field.
EXEMPTION: You are exempt from the qualification requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet one of the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
