Located within the VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) in West Roxbury, MA, the accounting technician performs duties as designated teller and in accounts receivables. The person in this position is responsible for providing exceptional customer service in a fast paced, detailed and methodical work environment while working with frustrated customers and conducting detailed research on various types of payments and debts
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Receives and properly accounts for many different types of collections, including but not limited to funds for deposit to patients' accounts, reimbursement for hospitalization, refunds for benefit overpayments, salary overpayments, guest meal collections, etc.
Reviews and explains billing statement to patients where statements do not itemize or describe the charges
Collects advanced funds from the Agent Cashier to make cash disbursements.
Prepares and submits a request for reimbursement of funds
Collects all Accounts Receivable payments received and accurately identifies and applies those payments to open Bills of Collection for indebtedness to the U.S. Government
Analyzes transactions for accuracy and determination of appropriation(s) to credit funds received
Audits payment documents received from vendors, employees, Patient Funds, deposits
Reviews records to determine accuracy of costing, timeliness of reconciliations
Examines credit memos and reclaims from vendors to determine appropriateness
Ensures proper accounting procedures are enforced to accurately record financial transactions
Reconciles and balances accounting receivables
Analyzes, codes, and processes all types of accounting transactions involving various types of funds
Performs clerical, assistant, or technician level work in support of budgeting, accounting, auditing, payroll, fiscal, and/or financial management functions
Performs other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-6 grade level, you must have: At least one full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service (GS-5), that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of an Accounting Technician. Specialized experience is experience where you were responsible for maintaining financial accounts and verifying accuracy of data; coordinating all financial activities including cash processing, disbursements, bank deposits, receipts, reconciling errors, discrepancies, non-standard transactions, etc; experience that has provided an understanding of basic accounting practices, policies and principles. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
