The primary purpose of this position is to install, operate, inspect, maintain, and repair aircraft arresting systems, electrical power production equipment and associated components, electrical distribution equipment, diesel, gasoline, and/or multi-fuel engines.

Duties

Maintains, inspects, repairs, diagnoses, and modifies aircraft arresting systems. Perform daily weekly and monthly inspections. Perform after engagement inspection and certification. Installs, inspects, and performs modifications and repairs to electrical generators both real property and mobile units. Perform preventive maintenance on electrical power support systems. Troubleshoot electrical power support systems such as electrical generating plants and power distribution equipment. Perform major repair, replacement, and overhaul of power support system components such as diesel engines, main alternator stators and rotors up to 200kw, and electrical accessories of engines. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Maintain records and documents actions.

  • Positions requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle up to and including a 2-1/2 ton truck. An appropriate valid driver's license is required.
  • Position may require the employee to operate a forklift up to 15,000 pound capacity to move heavy power support equipment.
  • May be required to train/guide lower-graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees.
  • Position requires initial and ongoing physical examinations.
  • Perform work that involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing, and arm movement. Sometimes must work in awkward positions or cramped areas. Lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier items using jacks, hoists, or helpers.
  • May work inside or outside. Inside work involves frequent exposure to drafts, changing temperature, and loud noise. May work on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy and which may be dangerous to operate or repair because of defects.
  • Outside work may involve exposure to inclement weather, rain, snow, wet or icy conditions. Both inside and outside work may be frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors and surfaces.
  • Exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains, electrical shock while repairing, positioning, adjusting, moving equipment and is exposed to the possibility of burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids, lubricants.
  • Incumbent must follow numerous safety procedures and wear equipment such as protective eyeglasses, hearing protection, hard hats, Safety-toe shoes, respirators, gloves, PPE clothing, may be uncomfortable to wear or use, worn or used for long periods.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 - Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is Ability to Do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials Trouble shooting PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
